February 28th, 2009

Samsung has yet another new mobile phone; this time it is the Samsung Double Folder OZ mobile handset, which as the name suggests incorporates a double joint mechanism which means if can fold two ways.

The Samsung Double Folder OZ features a 2.8 inch LCD display, along with a 3 megapixel camera, and is said to improve the way the user watches TV via DMB or compressed mobile videos.

Actually what the double joint does is it enables the user to the Samsung Double Folder OZ either as a clamshell form mobile handset or a mini netbook. Only problem is its only available in Korea and carries a price tag of $395.

Video: Sonim XP1 is it indestructible?

February 28th, 2009

I’m not too sure why anyone would want to do this, but hey it’s certainly entertaining. Sonim claimed that their XP1 mobile phone is indestructible and so someone has put that claim to the ultimate test.

Christen da Costa decided to test Somin’s claims and took his Sonim XP1 handset to the local firing range and set about shooting the handset.

Apparently, Sonim had said the XP1 handset could withstand shots from a 9mm gun. Of course all this was captured on video and we have that video for you viewing pleasure. So hit up the video below and check out just how well the Sonim XP1 faired.

RIM BlackBerry Bold gains forth band in Japan?

February 28th, 2009

The RIM BlackBerry Bold has gained a forth band of 3G in Japan at the request of Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, so this means the Japanese can now enjoy a quad band 3G BlackBerry Bold.

The new quad band 3G BlackBerry Bold went on sale this weekend in Japan carrying 800/850/1900/2100 MHz bands for UMTS/HSDPA.

So does this mean that Research In Motion will apply a forth band of 3G to any country that requests it? Probably not, but then it obviously doesn’t hurt to ask just like NTT DoCoMo did does it.

1 million Apple iPhone units sold in UK says O2

February 28th, 2009

After sixteen months of being available in the United Kingdom, O2 has revealed the Apple iPhone has only just reached the one million handsets sold.

This release is part of a wider release which looked at the highlights of O2’s latest financial quarter, and the one million mark relates to both the original Apple iPhone and the Apple iPhone 3G sold in the UK.

Apple originally launched the iPhone in the UK in November 07 and followed with the Apple iPhone 3G in July 08, and as of January 09 Apple has sold in excess of ten million iPhone handsets globally.

O2 and Orange gripe about Nokia Skype deal

February 27th, 2009

Not so long ago we posted an article on Skype being preloaded on Nokia N Series mobile phones, well it appears O2 and Orange have got the grumps over it as they aren’t too happy about Skype taking a chunk of their voice revenues.

The word going round is that should the Skype Nokia deal go ahead then O2 and Orange will consider pulling their N97 stock and maybe even pull other Skype enabled Nokia handsets.

So we’ll just have to wait and see if Orange and O2 can force Nokia to forget preloaded Skype, or if indeed O2 and Orange stop selling Nokia mobile phones.

Apple iPhone 3G to hit China in May?

February 27th, 2009

The Apple iPhone 3G and China, the big debate continues and had been going on ever since the Apple iPhone 3G was launched, but there is now a whisper that maybe Apple has finally cracked the Chinese market.

According to Shanghai Daily a deal between Apple and China Unicom is close to being finalised. China Unicom is China’s 2nd largest carrier that will have a functional WCDMA network operational in May.

Apple had originally negotiated with China Mobile to bring the Apple iPhone to China but negotiations failed. Still only a whisper at the moment but if China Unicom does launch the Apple iPhone it will be made available to in excess of 130 million potential customers.

Video: Nokia N800 runs Windows CE and Android via VMware

February 27th, 2009

Research In Motion had been working hard to get a pseudo BlackBerry operating system into Windows Mobile, but as they say two are better than one anyway, so why not have both OS’s running at the same time by utilising VMware.

We have a video demonstration of Windows CE and Google Android running concurrent on a Nokia N800 with no real noticeable lag. VMware has one added bonus and that is it can extract and back up handset data regardless of operating system.

No announcement is forthcoming as yet but VMware is working across all major OEMs and platforms, but one has to wonder who will be the first to adopt and support this.

Apple iPhone for free in Japan from Softbank?

February 27th, 2009

One would think to offer the Apple iPhone 3G as a free mobile handset something must be drastically wrong with sales, but apparently that’s what is happening in Japan with Softbank.

CrunchGear reports that Softbank is attempting to push sales of the Apple iPhone 3G and intend on offering the 8GB version for free with a two year contract while on the same two year contract you can have the 16GB Apple iPhone 3G for just $100.

This offer by Softbank will run as of today until the end of March and furthermore, data plans for the Apple iPhone 3G are being discounted to roughly $45.00 rather than the usual $60.00 per month.
